AI Search Visibility Tracking Tool: What It Returns
An AI search visibility tracking tool shows whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name your client and which sources they cite. See all 8 tools.
The AI search visibility tracking tool worth an agency's time asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions a client's customers would ask, then shows you two things: whether the client's brand appears in the answer, and which sources that answer cites. In DFY Hub, that's the set of AI Search Visibility tools in the SEO MCP, eight tools you run from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP-compatible assistant. They return answer text, cited sources, named brands and AI search volume. They don't decide what any of it means. Someone on your team still does that.

What changes when you measure AI answers
A rank tracker gives you a position. Position 3 for "emergency plumber Austin" is a number you can chart and put in a report.
An AI answer doesn't work that way. It's a paragraph, maybe a short list of businesses, and a handful of cited links. So the question moves from "where do we rank?" to "are we named, and whose page did the assistant trust?"
That's the real shift, and that's why a classic rank report can't stand in for this check.
(If you've suspected that a single AI visibility score hides more than it shows, I'd agree. I'd be wary of any tool that boils an answer down to one tidy number without letting you read the answer itself.)
What the eight tools return
Everything in this table comes from the live tools page.
| Tool | What comes back |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search Results | The answer text, cited sources (URLs and domains), brands mentioned, and structured items in the answer, including ad items and whether each was actually shown |
| ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity Response (four tools) | Each assistant's full response to a prompt you write |
| AI Search Volume | Last month's AI search volume plus a 12-month trend, for up to 1,000 keywords per call |
| LLM Mentions Search | Mention counts per keyword or domain, AI search volume, cited sources, brand entities and fan-out queries, for up to 10 targets per call |
| LLM Mentions Summary | Total mentions, AI search volume, top citing sources, and a breakdown by location, language and platform |
Two caveats before you plan around it. The two LLM Mentions tools are available on request, so you ask to have them turned on for your account first. And the four Response tools hand back the answer as text. Spotting your client's name in it is your job (or your assistant's), not a separate field in the output.
How an agency would run it for a client
Setup is short. You add the SEO MCP server URL to your AI assistant, sign in with your Done For You Hub account through OAuth, and ask in plain English. The assistant picks the tools, and credits come off your balance per call.
A sensible monthly routine for one local client:
- Write 10 to 20 prompts the way a customer would phrase them. "Who's the best HVAC company in Phoenix?" beats "hvac phoenix". The tools page gives the same advice.
- Ask all four assistants, word for word. Identical wording is what makes the answers comparable.
- Pull ChatGPT Search Results for the top five queries, since that's the tool that breaks out cited sources and named brands as separate items.
- Check demand with AI Search Volume on the full keyword list, then compare it with Google search volume from the keyword research tools.
- Log every result yourself. Date, prompt, assistant, named or not, sources cited.
That last step matters more than it looks. Per the SEO MCP page, the server is a stateless proxy that doesn't store your queries or the responses. Nothing builds a history in the background. If you want a trend line for a client, you keep the log and rerun the same list on a schedule, which is what the tools page suggests for tracking citation changes.
Where a person stays in the loop
This is the part I'd push hardest on with any agency team.
AI answers aren't fixed. Ask the same question twice and the wording, the list of businesses and even the cited sources can shift. One run that leaves your client out isn't a crisis, and one run that names them isn't a win. Look for a pattern across several runs before you tell a client anything.
Then there's interpretation, and none of these tools does it for you:
- Accuracy. An assistant can name the right business and still describe the wrong services, an old service area or outdated prices.
- Tone. Nothing in the output scores whether a mention is favorable. A person reads it.
- Source type. A competitor's blog post, a directory listing and your client's own service page each call for a different response.
And nothing here acts on its own. The tools retrieve and return data when you or your assistant run them. They don't edit a client's site, send alerts or watch for changes between runs. Deciding what to fix, and doing the fixing, stays with your team.
What it won't tell you
It won't give you a rank position, because an AI answer doesn't have one. It won't explain why an assistant trusted one source over another. And it can't promise that changes to a client's site will show up in the next answer. Nobody can promise that.
What it does replace is the one-off spot check. Before, "does ChatGPT recommend us?" got answered by somebody typing the question into a chat window once, with no record of the sources. Now it's a repeatable check with the citations attached.
Where it fits next to your local SEO work
My view: for local service clients, the map pack is still the main event, and I wouldn't move budget out of local SEO to chase AI mentions. Add this as a monthly check on top of the work you already do.
It sits alongside the rest of the toolkit. A geo grid rank tracking tool shows where a client appears in the map pack across a service area. An automated SEO health report tool covers the website. A local SEO audit tool covers the listing and the local basics. AI visibility tells you whether any of that is reaching the assistants some customers now ask first.
To try it, the Free plan includes 1,000 credits once you verify your email, and paid plans include a monthly credit allocation. There are no separate credit top-ups, so more credits come from moving up a plan. Check the tools page for current per-call credit costs before you plan a client routine.
Frequently asked questions
What does an AI search visibility tracking tool measure?
It checks what AI assistants say when someone asks about a topic or brand. DFY Hub's AI Search Visibility tools return the full answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, the sources ChatGPT search cites and the brands it names, plus AI search volume with a 12-month trend. A person still reads the answers and judges whether each mention is accurate and favorable.
Can an agency use it across several clients?
Yes. The tools take any brand, domain, keyword or prompt, so you can check each client in turn from the same connected assistant. The SEO MCP doesn't store your queries or the responses, though, so keep a log for each client and rerun the same prompt list on a schedule if you want to show change over time.
Will it alert me when a client stops appearing in AI answers?
No. The tools return results when you or your assistant run them; they don't watch anything between runs or send alerts. Set a recurring date to rerun each client's prompt list, compare the answers against your log, and have someone on your team review any change before it goes into a client conversation.
Which AI assistants can it check?
Four: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity each have a Response tool that returns the assistant's full answer to your prompt. ChatGPT also has a Search Results tool that separates out cited sources, named brands and ad items. The two LLM Mentions tools cover ChatGPT or Google's AI results and are turned on by request.
Do I need a paid plan to try it?
No. The Free plan includes 1,000 credits once you verify your email, and every tool call deducts credits from that balance. Paid plans include a monthly credit allocation. There are no separate credit top-ups, so getting more credits means moving up a plan. The tools page lists what each call currently costs.
